This is a model of sound ethnography implemented by the geographer Claire Guiu, as part of Ciudad Sonora. This research technique invites participants to describe a local landscape but, instead of using images, sounds are chosen. This activity was sponsored by the NGO “ASOMA” located in the town of Miguel Grau, municipality of Paucarpata, Arequipa. We worked with children between 5 and 12 years of age, who drew a postcard of their community to later represent or evoke the elements of the image they made with sounds, for which they used musical instruments, toys and sound objects that we provided them. In addition to the drawing and sound interpretation work, we made field recordings in a local market and carried out listening and recognition exercises of various soundscapes.
The recordings were captured in brief soundscapes, representative of each of their postcards.
